DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY
Balaghat Shikshan Sanstha’s, Arts, Science, Commerce College, Naldurg has established in the year 1971. Department of Botany is running academic programs at UG and Ph.D. level with the support of four teachers. It is one of the leading departments in the field of teaching and research activities. The Department is providing the views to prepare the students desirous of learning, understanding, teaching and practising various aspects of plant science.
The Department is known for its multidisciplinary character and has earned recognition at national & international level for its standards of research. The Department is proud of having eminent Ph.D. scholars and administrators who occupy high positions. In view of its academic excellence, the department has the distinction of having one of the richest research laboratory in the affiliated university.
Botany Department offers teaching at the under-graduate level. The Department has introduced the graduate courses like Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Plant Taxonomy, Plant Biotechnology, Genetics, Microbiology, Mycology and Plant Pathology, Plant Disease management, Plant physiology etc. The department has undertaken the student’s projects in the areas of Mycology and Plant Pathology, Medicinal Plants etc.
The Department has conducted the value added course on “Use of agrochemicals in Farming” and field projects on “Adverse Impact of Pesticides on Biodiversity” for the enrichment of skill development. Faculty members have active collaborations with Scientists, Professors from Institutes and Universities in India.
Student's seminars and botanical excursions and farmers related extension activities are the regular activities of the department. The students were actively participated in ‘AVISHAKAR’ and other scientific events. The department has successfully organised a National Conference on 'Frontiers of plant sciences for sustainable agriculture and Rural Development' on 28 & 29th January, 2011.
PECULIARITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT:
- Department has a rich research laboratory equipped with BOD incubator, Laminar Air Flow, Water bath, Autoclave, Glass distillation plant, Soxhlet apparatus, Binocular Microscopes, Stereo-Zoom Microscopes, LCD Projectors, Electronic Balances, Hot Plate, Hot Air Oven, Centrifuge, Freeze, Spectrophotometer, Incubator, Sieves etc.
- A well maintained Botanical garden with many economical and medicinal important plants is the strength of the department.
- Department has rich herbarium collection of flora including bryophytes.
- Department has rich voucher specimen collection of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi.
- Department has more than 50 fungal and few important bacterial cultures.
- Department has isolated and maintained 6 species of Trichoderma
- Department has submitted 6 different pathogen nucleotide sequences to Gene Bank.
- Department has produced 16 Ph.Ds. and pursing more than 10.
- Department has published more than 200 research publication in national & international journals.
- The Department has undertaken 6 research projects in the areas of Mycology and plant pathology and has received generous funding from Government funding agencies like UGC, DST etc.
- Department has produced 5 books, one Autobiography, two syllabus and two research.
- Department has organized Educational trips, medicinal plant exhibition, industrial visit etc.
