About the Department
The U.G. Department of Zoology is established in 1971. Since its establishment, the department has good reputation and good academic performance in the rural region. It has a good record of results in university examination. In addition to undergraduate, has Post Graduate studies and Research centre as well. The establishment of this department was not only to create opportunities for higher education but also to develop basic research of academic interest as well as applied nature. The thrust areas of the Department are Apiculture, Vermiculture, Sericulture, Fisheries and Environmental Biology. The Department has developed a decent Zoological museum with new species. This is being done by the department for maintaining environment of campus.
Our faculty members of the department are also involved in active research. The department carried out 5 major and minor research projects of various funding agencies. Free consultancy in Apiculture, Vermiculture, Sericulture and Fisheries is the major work of this department. So far 25 research students were awarded Ph.D. in Zoology and Environmental Science.
History of the Department:
The aim of the college is to provide man-making education to the people in educationally backward areas. There was no facility of science education in this area of Naldurg up to 1971. To provide the science education the eminent personalities of this area established the ‘Balaghat Education Society’ Naldurg. It is premier institution of this area catering to the educational needs of the people.
The Zoology department provides an opportunity to the people of this area to verify the principles of science through Zoology and explore possibilities of applications of Zoology in their lives. This is one of the largest science departments of the college.
The Department has a legacy renowned teachers like Prof. M. B. Suryawanshi, Prof. A. B. Devkar and Prof. V. R. More. Permanently Dr. H. K. Jadhav is the only faculty working in the department. The current research and teaching in the department includes various aspects of Animal Physiology, Hydrobiology, Fish Nutrition and Toxicology. Apart from teaching, the faculty has been publishing papers in National and International Journals. More than 75 research papers, 02 books and one lab manual have been published.
Objective of the department:
- To impart the knowledge of subject and create awareness and curiosity about recent discoveries being made in the subject.
- To explore hidden talents of students by arranging various activities.
- To create research culture in the department and to produce research oriented graduates.
- To motivate the faculty to undertake research projects so as to create research environment in the department.
Infrastructure:
- The department of Zoology is in an area of 463. 38 sq. meters.
- Two spacious laboratories with adequate equipments, chemicals and glass wares.
- One museum with specimens of animals displayed in proper taxonomical sequence.
- It has Wi-Fi connection.
- Departmental library has 50 books and 05 Journals.
Research facilities:
- Recognized as Research centre by Dr. B. A. M, University, Aurangabad since 2006. Also Dr. H. K. Jadhav is a recognized as a research guide of Dr. B. A. M, University, Aurangabad and JJT University, Rajasthan.
- Under his guidance two research students have been awarded Ph.D. degree and two students are working for Ph.D.
Awards and Honors:
- Best Young Scientist Award by PEARL Foundations for Educational Excellence Award Madurai, Tamilnadu 10 December 2016.
Extension Services:
- We are extending technical guidance to fishermen and aquarists at Udgir-Latur and Aurangabad.
- The department offers need based consultancy services to needy farmers, Apiculturist, Vermiculturist and Pisciculturists as a social obligation in the field of water and soil analysis.
- The department has made remarkable strides during last 50 years and is committed to continue hard working for excellence in science.
